Alexandra Grant talks to PEOPLE exclusively at the launch of new wine brand LOVEwine, inspired by her art initiative grantLOVE
The “key” to her relationship with Keanu Reeves, she says, is “the mutual respect”
“You want to always be respectful and leave the other person to bake their cake,” says the artist
Alexandra Grant and Keanu Reeves' relationship is built on solid ground.
Calling her longtime partner “so creative,” Grant, 53, opens up about how important mutual respect is with Reeves, whom she's been publicly dating since 2019.
“So many of the values that we both bring to our work as individuals, our work together, the things that we collaborate on, our enjoyment of life, our constant respect for the other, has to do with that desire to be truly alive and full of life,” the visual artist shares at a launch event for her new wine brand LOVEwine in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 28.
“I'd say the key to it is the mutual respect,” Grant adds of her relationship. “And also just like, come on, it's play, right? It's play that we get to play creatively.”

Reeves, 61, first connected professionally with the artist on the 2011 book Ode to Happiness, which he wrote and Grant illustrated. They co-founded a publishing house in 2017 and went public with their relationship two years later.
Reeves and Grant also walked red carpets as a couple as recently as the April 6 premiere of Reeves' new Apple TV movie Outcome.

As for their processes as artists, says Grant, the Matrix star is “always cautious, I think, with feedback, and I would say the same. You want to always be respectful and leave the other person to bake their cake."
She continues, "There is all the listening in the world that we know that we could talk about any problem or challenge or creative idea and talk about it forever if that is needed, and also respect the individual need to dive deep and have a process that's maybe quiet or in another collaboration."

When Reeves is “in a character” for a screen project, she says by way of example, “I have so much respect for that understanding that this is the middle to the end of a project, right? And I think the same goes for painting. When I'm in painter mode, I am in it. I'm fully in it, and it's not playing a character, but it is performing, you know, painting really is a form of performance too."

Grant's new wine brand is a collaboration between her art and design initiative grantLOVE — she frequently uses the LOVE symbol in her work, per the project's site — and California's J Vineyards and Winery. It was inspired by the initiative and her own childhood experiences in Paris.
Reeves' absence at the event, says Grant, comes down to recently wrapping a movie and performing with his band Dogstar, which is releasing a new album. “He knows that their two creative lives are both independent and together. And so I'm rooting him on tonight,” she says. “I mean, how cool is this, right? I'm launching a wine, and he's launching an album.”
