Joaquin Phoenix had merely three-and-a-half weeks to transform himself into Johnny Cash for Walk the Line.

Released in 2005, the film chronicled the singer's formative years, his romance with June Carter, his rise as a country music icon, and his battles with substance abuse.

Joaquin portrayed Johnny, starring opposite Reese Witherspoon as June Carter, Ginnifer Goodwin as Vivian Cash, and Robert Patrick as Ray Cash. This comes as the actor spoke out about his severe weight loss for the Joker role.

In preparation for the role, Joaquin trained with renowned voice coach Roger Love, who taught him to replicate Johnny's speaking and singing style. Roger previously collaborated with Colin Firth on the film Crazy Heart.

Discussing the experience with The Irish Star, Roger revealed, "I took Joaquin Phoenix, who wasn't a singer, and I turned him into Johnny Cash for the movie Walk the Line, and Reese Witherspoon. She won an Academy Award."

Roger explained he transformed Joaquin by teaching him to replicate Johnny's distinctive vocal qualities. "All great singers learn to mimic other singers. That's how they create their own style," he noted.

The celebrity voice coach added, "Great singers or great wannabe singers have to be good imitators. So I would help them by breaking down all of the specific sounds that Johnny Cash made. And then I would show Joaquin how to make those sounds."

While Roger collaborated closely with Joaquin to transform him into Johnny, he acknowledged the director placed less emphasis on Reese capturing June's vocal qualities. "He said just sort of put in the flavor of that era for her voice," Roger remembered.

He noted, "But the director certainly cared to have Joaquin sound like Johnny Cash."

Roger characterized his work with Joaquin as a "process of learning to imitate."

He explained, "We all imitate the sounds of the people around us. That's how we learn. That's how we learn words and we learn the sounds attached to those words.

"So most people, they grow up and they're imitating, sometimes not the right people to imitate, sometimes not the right voices. So the best voices open themselves up to listening to other voices that are amazing and different than them. Imitation is a part of learning."

Joaquin and Reese aren't the only performers Roger has trained. He also helped Bradley Cooper develop his singing abilities for A Star Is Born, the movie he co-starred in with Lady Gaga.

The experience with Bradley differed from his time with Joaquin, as Roger trained the actor five days a week over six months, dedicating an hour to each session. By comparison, Roger stated, "When I did walk the line, I only had three-and-a-half weeks total with Joaquin and Reese, and I did all of that in three-and-a-half weeks. So sometimes I have a little less time, and sometimes I have a little more time."
