Paul Wesley teases similarities between “The Vampire Diaries” and new show with Nina Dobrev: ‘Twists and turns’

Paul Wesley spilled the tea on working with Nina Dobrev on new show You Deserve to Know.
The actor explained how their upcoming project differs from The Vampire Diaries but shares some similarities.
“It was something that we had been aspiring to do,” he told EW about sharing the screen with Dobrev again.
If Paul Wesley’s going to do anything, it’s spill the tea.
The Vampire Diariesstar stopped by Entertainment Weekly’s 2026 San Diego Comic-Con studio this past weekend and gushed over reuniting with former costar Nina Dobrev for their upcoming thriller show, You Deserve to Know.
“Nina and I have been very close, and we’ve stayed friendly. ... We’re close friends,” he told EW, noting that they “always dabbled” with the idea of reuniting on screen. Then, Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper and her Unwell Network “came through” with You Deserve to Know, which “worked” for Wesley and Dobrev.
“It was something that we had been aspiring to do,” Wesley continued. “There were a few things that we were offered that just didn’t make sense.”
You Deserve to Know is based on the 2025 novel of the same name by Aggie Blum Thompson. It follows three suburban couples whose lives unfold when one husband is murdered.
“It’s this beautiful ensemble,” Wesley continued. “It’s this perfect mix of exploring relationships between neighbors and husbands and wives and friends. Then, also, a juicy murder mystery. We just thought this is a mature version of giving something for The Vampire Diaries fans who have grown up and are now, perhaps, not in their, you know, teens.”
He added, “They’re in their 20s and 30s and they want something a little more edgy and a little more sophisticated.”

Wesley teased that the show is “full of twists and turns” — and even compared it to The Vampire Diaries.

“What made The Vampire Diaries such a big hit is that every episode ended with sort of a hook that made you want to watch the next episode, and this was pre-streaming,” he explained. “This time, we’re going to do the same thing in a very different way — minus the vampires —where every episode leaves you guessing.”
He added, “You’re consistently kept on edge, in a good way, and that’s what we really want the audience to feel.”

Wesley teased to EW that there are “certainly” different vibes on the You Deserve to Know set compared to when they worked together on The Vampire Diaries. Fans of the CW show know that Wesley and Dobrev “bickered” while playing Stefan Salvatore and Elena Gilbert, respectively, on the teen drama. But they were able to get over any past drama.
“She’s the best,” he added. “I think I could speak for the both of us when I say that we really respect and have a deep love for one another.”
