Kate Middleton and Prince William have spoken about not allowing their three children to have smartphones. The rule will remain in place as Prince George prepares to start boarding school this fall.

The eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, who celebrated his 13th birthday on July 22, will attend Eton College in September. Even though all students live on campus full time, the first-year students are forbidden from having smartphones, as reported by People.

Prince George’s School Its Mobile Policy

In 2024, the BBC reported that Prince George‘s boarding school, Eton College, decided to give basic “brick” phones to Year 9 students. This is the same grade George will enter this fall. These simple devices do not have internet access and allow students to call or text their families outside of classroom hours without online distractions.

The school implemented this after doing a full review of its technology guidelines. Officials explained that banning smartphones for first-year students helps in balancing the advantages of technology with the challenges it introduces to educational spaces.

Both William and Kate are passionate supporters of keeping smartphones out of their children’s hands. The royal couple maintains a strict ‘no-smartphone policy’ at home for George and their other kids, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

While speaking to actor Eugene Levy on Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler, Prince William openly admitted how strict they are with the rule. He said, “None of our children have any phones, which we’re very strict about.”

Speaking about the issue, Prince William spoke during his November 2025 trip to Brazil for the Earthshot Prize awards. While speaking with TV presenter Luciano Huck, the royal heir admitted that protecting kids from digital risks is very difficult.

“Our children don’t have phones. I think when George moves on to secondary school, then maybe he might have a phone that has no internet access,” William explained.

“And to be honest, it’s getting to the point where it’s becoming a little bit of a, like, tense issue. But I think he understands why,” Prince William added.

“We communicate why we don’t think it’s right. And again, I think it’s the internet access I have a problem with. I think children can access too much stuff they don’t need to see online, and so having a phone and text message, the old sort of ‘brick phone’ as they call them, I think that’s fine.”

Moreover, a source close to the royal family told People that Prince George looks up to his father and wants to follow in his footsteps. Apart from enrolling at his dad’s alma mater, reports have also indicated that George is interested in learning how to fly, much like his father, who is a trained pilot.

Prince William also told Hello! that his eldest son has a passion for scuba diving.

“George loves scuba diving. He’s 11 years old. We took him under, thinking he would freak out. He absolutely loves it. It’s just introducing him to the world of water,” he said.
