Prince William Is Reportedly “Absolutely Determined” to Get This Right for Prince George

Prince William is not only a future king, but he is raising a future king.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s eldest child, Prince George, turns the milestone age of 13 on July 22.

William is “absolutely determined to get it right” when it comes to raising not just George but also his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Nobody knows what it’s like to be a future king growing up in the glare of the spotlight quite like Prince William. It’s an experience William’s eldest son Prince George knows well, too—and William is “absolutely determined to get it right” when it comes to George’s upbringing.

That goes for the childhoods of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, too—but George, as heir to the throne, has an extra layer of responsibility added to his path. As George approaches his milestone 13th birthday on July 22, friends of the family speaking to The Telegraph describe him as “incredibly down to earth,” but also “aware of his future.” The outlet describes George as “a sporting all-rounder, a surprisingly good artist,” and someone who is still getting used to walkabouts, a key component of royal life. The publication described George as “arguably the best-prepared heir in history.”

That is largely because of William and Kate Middleton, who have been focused on making their children’s path to adulthood as seamless as possible “since the moment they first talked about having children,” according to The Telegraph.

“The biggest thing is that it has to be family first,” a friend said. “They will serve the institution, but they will also make sure their children are raised with as much normality as possible.”

Raising their children—including George, the “future future king”—is considered part of William and Kate’s job description. The children have been spoken about in Kensington Palace strategy meetings since the Princess of Wales—then the Duchess of Cambridge—announced she was pregnant with George back in late 2012. A different source told The Telegraph that learning from the mistakes of the past has been “absolutely central.”

For royal parents, duty has often superseded being a mother or father. Not so with the Prince and Princess of Wales.

“The way they have lived their lives—getting the kids outside, spending time together, focusing on the school run—it’s just as strategic as any other part of their public service,” a source said. “Preparing their children for the lives they are going to lead, it’s central to their roles—it’s not something that’s on the side.”

Royal biographer Russell Myers said that William and Kate are “extremely protective” of George, Charlotte, and Louis. They will be on hand to help George “navigate” the challenges of the modern world, especially as he heads to Eton College in September—William’s alma mater.

“William’s experience of Eton was a happy one, but both he and Catherine realize their children’s school lives may be considerably different in today’s world,” Myers said. He added that choosing Eton for George was a family decision, which “shows how connected they are and how George and his siblings have been prepared for whatever may lie ahead.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales have given “really careful consideration as to when and how to introduce all their children to royal work and strike the balance with their normal lives,” a source who knows the family told The Telegraph.

An insider added that the couple “should be confident about the years ahead. There are challenges, but they have been absolutely consistent about putting the family at the heart of everything they do, and the public supports them.”
