Prince William's World Cup absence explained as he skips England game

Prince William may be a passionate soccer supporter, but surprisingly, he has never attended a World Cup match.
With the England team having played their semi-final game yesterday, July 15, many expected William to be in the stands cheering them on. However, the Prince of Wales wasn't seen at the game - and also hasn't attended any others in the competition.
While numerous factors could explain this, such as the lengthy flight required and the matches taking place during term time - which only ended earlier this month - one royal commentator believes there's a more significant reason behind William's absence. While William hasn't been at the World Cup, he was seen at Wimbledon with his family.

In conversation with Celebrity Intelligence, royal author Richard Fitzwilliams explained that while the children remain William's top priority, which may account for his decision not to travel to America for the matches, the situation is more complicated than it appears.
Any American trip for William to watch the soccer games would probably need to be coupled with official royal duties, including a meeting with President Donald Trump.

Fitzwilliams told the publication, "If Prince William did visit the US, it would almost certainly involve meeting President Trump. Royalty has to be used sparingly. Handling this with care gives it a special cachet."
During an appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce's New Heights podcast earlier this month, Travis suggested that William should make the trip across the Atlantic if England reach the final. William was quick to agree. "Definitely, if we're in the finals," he teased.
Although William has yet to take his seat in the stands, he has been rallying behind the team from a distance via social media, assuring the squad that he has never been "in doubt" about their ability to win.

Sadly, William's dreams of England winning the World Cup won't be coming true this time around. The England team lost 2-1 to Argentina on Wednesday, July 15, meaning they're knocked out of the competition.
The Prince of Wales issued a statement not long after England's defeat and thanked the players for getting to the semi-finals. He said the country is "proud" of them, adding, "Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you.
"Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high. W."
Argentina are now through to the final, which will take place on Sunday, July 19. While William hasn't attended any of the World Cup games in person, it's believed he watched all the games from his Forest Lodge home with his family.
