A viral post on July 25 brought a high-definition pirated copy of the action/fantasy movie The Odyssey to millions of users on X. At 2:25 p. m. PT, an X user posted, "Someone uploaded 'The Odyssey' full movie on X. Can you believe it?" resharing content that featured a high-quality version of the blockbuster. The original account has since been suspended.
Prior to its suspension, the video featuring the Matt Damon-led film racked up more than 2.1 million views in just two and a half hours. By then, the streaming content had been replaced with a takedown notice, with the account being suspended shortly thereafter.
Despite the leak, the movie's box office success shows no signs of slowing down. The Odyssey pulled in another $87 million during its second weekend. Interest in the film's highly sought-after IMAX 70 mm screenings also remains strong. This follows Matt Damon crediting his female stunt double with 'the greatest arms I've ever seen' in the film.

Variety reported that as of July 26, several pirated copies of the movie were still accessible on X, though many had been hijacked by mislabeled files advertising "The Odyssey" but instead delivering a Rickroll, the classic internet prank that tricks viewers into watching the music video for Rick Astley's 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up."

Universal Pictures released a statement to Variety addressing the leak, noting, "We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols.

"We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."
X owner Elon Musk, however, has made no secret of his divisive views on the film. He wrote, "Who specifically is the a------ who added DEI lies to Academy Awards eligibility instead of it just being about making the best movie?"
The billionaire further claimed that his AI tool Grok Imagine would produce a "historically accurate" version of the film for release this year.
The blockbuster boasts an all-star cast including Hollywood heavyweights Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and rapper Travis Scott.
Audiences, however, took aim at director Christopher Nolan over his decision to cast Travis Scott in the high-profile production.

In a sit-down with Time magazine, the 55-year-old filmmaker addressed the backlash surrounding the 35-year-old's casting.
"I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap," the Batman Begins director told Time.
