'The Voice' Nigeria star dead at 26 after lethal snake bite
Ifunanya Nwangene, a Nigerian singer who rose to fame while competing on the African country's version of "The Voice," has died. She was 26.
Nwangene's Jan. 31 death was confirmed by the Amemuso Choir, of which she was a member, in a post to Facebook on Feb. 1. The young singer died at a federal medical center after being bitten by a snake, according to the post.
"A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world," the post read. "Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed."
Nwangene competed on "The Voice" Nigeria in 2021, making it midway through the season before being eliminated during the knockout round. Her coach was Nigerian singer Waje.
Sam Ezugwu, co-founder and music director of the Amemuso Choir, told the BBC that Nwangene had been planning her first solo concert for later in the year.
He said he rushed to the hospital after hearing she was there, but the medical facility had only one of the necessary antivenoms for treatment. Antivenoms help treat a snake bite by boosting a patient's immune response.
"While they were trying to stabilize her, she could not speak but she could make hand gestures. She was struggling to breathe," Ezugwu told the outlet. He said he went out to search for the antivenom treatment, but when he returned, she had died.

Catherine O'Hara, the legendary actress known for "Home Alone," "Best in Show" and "Schitt's Creek," died on Jan. 30 at the age of 71, O'Hara's manager confirmed to People magazine. A cause of death was not given.A veteran in the entertainment industry, O'Hara has been one of the most lauded and respected actors of her generation, winner of two career Emmy awards, a Golden Globe and two Actor Awards (formerly Screen Actors Guild Awards). She was nominated for two Emmys at the 2025 ceremony.
The Jabi medical center, which treated the artist, denied his account in a statement to the BBC.
"Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom," the hospital said in a statement to the outlet.
"We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily," the statement read, noting she had suffered severe complications from the bite.
