Tom Hiddleston‘s new documentary series just dethroned one of Marvel’s biggest hits on Disney+. The show’s rapid rise across multiple streaming platforms reveals how quickly it captured audience attention after its premiere.

Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston beats X-Men ’97, tops Disney+

Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston has claimed the No. 1 spot on Disney+’s TV shows chart in the United States, based on FlixPatrol data from July 27, 2026.

The documentary-drama knocked X-Men ’97 down to No. 4 on the platform’s TV rankings. National Geographic aired the three-part series on July 22, 2026. Bluey Compilations slipped to No. 3 after the show’s arrival on the chart.

The series holds the No. 2 position on Disney+’s overall chart, trailing only Descendants: Wicked Wonderland. It also secured the No. 4 spot on Hulu’s TV shows chart that same day. Over on the Apple TV Store’s TV rankings, the show jumped 13 places to reach No. 11. Locker Diaries: Descendants debuted at No. 2 on Disney+’s TV chart as a fresh entry.

Tom Hiddleston serves as both host and executive producer on the project through Ithaca. He launched the production company alongside producer Kevin R. Wright following their collaboration on Loki. The series blends documentary-style interviews with dramatized recreations of Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in 79 AD.

Three historical figures anchor the show’s narrative across the eruption’s 24-hour window. Avianius, a teenage bronzesmith apprentice, and Julia Felix, a bathhouse owner, feature prominently. The third subject is an unnamed Praetorian Guard. In the show, the Thor star collaborates with classicist Steven Tuck and his Pompeii Survivors Project.

Critics offered a divided response, though many acknowledged Hiddleston’s genuine enthusiasm. Reviewers praised his classical education as a source of authority for the project. Several outlets highlighted the show’s ability to potentially bring younger viewers toward historical documentary content.

The series is available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
